I remember having books with complete code that I would type into the computer. I would then run it to see if it worked. If not then I would go over the code to make sure I made no errors. When it worked I would make tweaks and change things to understand what they did. I would then be able to make my own simple programs. Years later I looked at books on programming and just gave up. They made programming horribly dull. I agree about the learning code. I remember having books with complete code that I would type into the computer. I would then run it to see if it worked. I had never met him in person, though I had tried to read and hear him talk about various things from AI, mathematics to music on the internet over the years for more than a decade. Its really a great loss that he is no more. Maybe he will return in the future through cryonics and do more incredible things. Farewell Marvin. Although I didn't get the chance to meet him, it seems Marvin shared your deep interest in people. Interesting how ideas like neural nets can be almost thrown away, and then roar back... I wonder what ideas are fading away now that will end up being key ideas in the future. A pleasure to read. I regret that I didn't keep tabs on everything Mr. Minsky was doing, because I clearly missed out on a lot of interesting stuff. Thanks for writing this post!
